Since taking the reins of his family domaine in 2012, Charles has transformed Arnoux-Lachaux into one of the most closely followed names in the region. The wines are now among the most sought-after in the world – not for their rarity alone, but for their clarity, precision, and sense of life. His philosophy is deemed by some radical in execution, but deeply rooted in respect: to step back, and let the vineyard and vintage speak.
Vosne-Romanée Reimagined
This is a domaine in movement. Pruning is severe to reduce yields and intensify fruit. Vines are trained tall to maximise photosynthesis and deepen root expression. Fermentations are whole bunch, with no punching down. From 2022 onwards, ageing is done entirely in ceramic. However, 2021 marks a milestone: the final vintage with oak ageing. It’s a vintage of grace and transparency, held back deliberately to allow time in bottle, and released only when Charles felt it was truly ready.

To some, Charles Lachaux's approach to viticulture may be revolutionary. to us it is merely a return to age-old principles. It may look radical today, but in truth, it’s as old as wine itself.
Winegrowing as it once was: hands in the soil, eyes on the canopy, and decisions guided by instinct and respect for nature.
FROM VINEYARD TO WINERY
Precision through purity
In recent years, Charles has pioneered a bold move away from oak entirely, turning instead to custom ceramic vessels for ageing. These amphora-like eggs preserve purity, tension and freshness, allowing the wines to breathe without interference. It’s not just innovation for its own sake, but a deliberate step toward transparency. At every stage, from canopy management to élevage, the same principle applies: nothing added, nothing obscured. Just the clearest possible expression of vineyard and vintage.
THE WINEMAKING
The 2021 VintaGE
A cooler, later year; one that rewards nuance over noise. The 2021 season marked Charles Lachaux’s second full campaign of regenerative viticulture, and a vintage that truly put his methods to the test. After the challenges of 2020, the vines were in recovery. Late pruning in March helped delay budburst, while natural grass cover, and for the first time, grazing sheep among the vines, provided both biodiversity and some protection from the spring frost. Disease pressure was real, but managed with care. In the end, the estate harvested healthy fruit with modest but meaningful yields: just 21 hl/ha on average.
In the cellar, macerations were short and gentle, between 6 and 9 days, resulting in wines of exceptional finesse and precision. The élevage was extended to 31 months, and the wines were bottled in April 2024, then held back for a full year before release. The goal is to offer not just great wines, but accomplished wines: fully composed, quietly expressive, and ready to speak clearly.
This is Burgundy at its most contemplative. A vintage that invites you to pause, to listen, and to be moved.
WHY WE’RE EXCITED…
My French might be a little rusty, but my tasting notes from Charles Lachaux’s wines feature “très bon” very frequently. I think it’s fair to now say, whilst he was awarded Best Rising Star in 2021 – the star has risen – and the wines are nothing short of extraordinary. In the 2021’s there’s an abundance of fruit, fantastic acidity, majestic spice and florals for days.
