Tasting Notes
Vosne-Romanée ‘Les Hautes Maizières’

Arnoux-Lachaux’s Vosne-Romanée Les Hautes Maizières 2021 comes from a small, beautifully placed parcel just below Suchots and Échezeaux, right beside Clos de Vougeot. The 2021 vintage marks a pivotal point for the domaine, with a long élevage in oak alongside Charles Lachaux’s growing move towards ceramic ageing.

In the glass, this is a more restrained and finely drawn expression of Vosne-Romanée. Red cherry, wild strawberry, darker berries, fine spice and a subtle earthy edge sit within a frame of freshness and quiet structure. It has the silk and perfume you want from Vosne, but in 2021 everything feels more transparent, more precise and more gently spoken.

This is not a wine built on obvious richness. Its appeal is in the detail: the lift of the fruit, the shape of the tannins, the mineral line and the way the wine moves with restraint rather than weight. A serious village wine from one of Burgundy’s most closely watched domaines.

The Plot

Les Hautes Maizières sits in one of the most compelling village-level positions in Vosne-Romanée, below Suchots and Échezeaux and beside Clos de Vougeot. Arnoux-Lachaux farms a small holding here of around 0.6 hectares, with old vines rooted in iron-rich soil.

The site is known for giving a little more tenderness and less force than the broader Vosne-Romanée village wine, but without losing depth. In 2021, that translates into a wine of finesse, perfume and quiet persistence.

Technical Details

The 2021 vintage at Arnoux-Lachaux was handled with restraint, suiting a cooler, more classical year. Macerations were gentle and short, followed by an extended 31-month élevage before bottling in April 2024.

This was the final Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux vintage aged in oak before the move to full ceramic ageing from 2022 onwards. For Les Hautes Maizières, that means the wine keeps its Vosne perfume and structure without being pushed too hard, with freshness, texture and vineyard character at the centre.
