Two barrels, one new and one from the previous year. More toast, less vanilla here. Electric fruit in a medium bodied form, fresh apples in the middle, a little ripe citrus behind, well integrated oak and fine persistence. Racy enough though softer to finish.

About this Wine

An extraordinary Pucelles. Waxy, almost beeswax-like lemon and white flowers give enormous depth, before a backbone of electric tension takes hold and carries the wine seemingly forever. Powerful, detailed and impeccably balanced. Bloody beautiful.

Flavour Profile

Floral and flinty, with waxy lemon, green apple, white blossom, ripe citrus, and a long mineral drive.

Tasting Notes

Philippe’s flagship 1er Cru. Waxy lemon, white flowers and extraordinary tension from one of Puligny's greatest terroirs.

Puligny Montrachet Premier Cru ‘Les Pucelles’

The nose is deep and complex, with waxy lemon, beeswax and white flowers layered over ripe citrus and a subtle toasted character. There is richness and concentration, but the palate never feels remotely cumbersome.

Instead, an extraordinary backbone of acidity and tension runs through the centre of the wine. Fresh apple and ripe citrus bring energy, while the oak is already beautifully integrated, adding texture and structure around the fruit rather than standing apart from it.

Then comes the length. It just keeps going. The waxy citrus, florals and fine mineral character are carried through a remarkably persistent finish, with enough freshness and structure to suggest there is considerably more still to come.

Jasper Morris also found the 2024 notably racy, highlighting its electric fruit, integrated oak and fine persistence, scoring it 91–94 points.

A wine of depth, power and extraordinary poise. One of Philippe Chavy’s great wines, from one of Puligny’s great vineyards.

The Plot

Philippe farms just 0.20 ha here, planted in 1947, producing only about three barrels – roughly 900 bottles – in a normal year. For 2024, just two barrels were made. The soils are clay-limestone, classic Puligny, and the two small parcels lie just below Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru, a position that gives Pucelles its famed perfume and grace.

Technical Details

Hand-harvested Chardonnay, whole-bunch pressed, fermented in tank before finishing in barrel. Aged 11 months in 228L barrels, in 2021 split between one new and one one-year-old barrel. 16 months’ élevage in total. Bottled by hand using the traditional chèvre à deux becs.
