About this Wine

One of the prettiest wines we tasted from Messager-Germain. Roses and violets leap from the glass, followed by pure strawberry and cherry fruit. Half of this tiny vineyard is planted to vines dating back to 1977, producing small berries of remarkable concentration. Yet there is nothing heavy here: this is graceful, perfumed Pinot, with black pepper, gentle spice and an intriguing touch of tea running through the finish.

Just 1,866 bottles were produced.

Tasting Notes

Roses, violets and old-vine Pinot from 1977 vines, with strawberry, cherry and black pepper. Just

Marsannay ‘En Leautier’

This is beautifully, almost extravagantly perfumed. Roses and violets come first, then fresh strawberry and red cherry, with the concentration of the old vines giving the fruit real depth without sacrificing an ounce of elegance. Black pepper and spice gradually emerge underneath, joined by a fascinating tea-like note that gives the finish another layer. Silky, fragrant and incredibly pretty Burgundy.

The Plot

En Leautier sits at the southern end of Marsannay, right on the border with Fixin. Messager-Germain farms just 0.38 hectares here.

The vineyard is split into two distinct sections. Around half is planted to vines dating from 1977, on deeper, richer soils. These older vines produce smaller, intensely concentrated berries and provide much of the wine's depth and richness. The other section sits on poorer, stonier ground with younger vines, bringing a finer, more delicate character.

That contrast is what makes En Leautier so compelling: concentration without weight, and perfume without fragility.

Technical Details

100% Pinot Noir, harvested by hand on 22 September 2024. The grapes were completely destemmed before a three-day pre-fermentation at 8°C. Extraction was deliberately gentle, with just three light punch-downs and mostly gentle pumping over with low oxygen exposure.

The wine was matured for 12 months in oak barrels, 30% new, before racking directly from the bottom of the barrel. Bottled without filtration.

Just 1,866 bottles were produced.
