I love the interplay of richness and stony tension in this great Corton-Charlemagne. Impressive concentration, but also a cool personality for this very hot and dry vintage. Delicate Amalfi lemons, angelica fruit and some dried flowers on the nose. Very long, chalky and lemony finish with excellent energy. From organically grown grapes.

About this Wine

A tiny-production Corton-Charlemagne from vines planted in 1952, with just 654 bottles made. Initially taut and mineral, it blossoms dramatically with air into layers of lemon, green apple, pear, white flowers and flint, finishing with extraordinary length and tension. This is an extraordinary stretch of vineyard, with Charles Lachaux and Domaine Leroy farming neighbouring vines right next-door, placing Frey among some exceptional company.

Tasting Notes

Just 654 bottles made. Old-vine Corton-Charlemagne with citrus, white flowers, flint and immense mineral length.

Just 654 bottles were made from old Chardonnay vines planted in 1952, high on the Corton hill in the Le Corton sector. It is a wine that does not reveal everything immediately. Give it air and it begins to unfurl, building layer after layer in the glass exactly as you hope a great Grand Cru will.

At first there is tension and minerality: flint, chalk, lemon and green apple. Then the wine begins to broaden, bringing pear, white blossom and a subtle creamy richness into the frame. The texture becomes increasingly silky, but the mineral line never disappears.

What really sets it apart is the way it develops. The aromatics become more expressive, the fruit deepens and the palate gains breadth while retaining an extraordinary sense of precision. It feels alive in the glass.

A stunning Corton-Charlemagne with immense length, old-vine depth and the kind of slow, evolving complexity that makes Grand Cru Burgundy so compelling.

The Plot

Cuvée 1952 comes from just 12.08 ares of Corton-Charlemagne in the Le Corton sector, planted in 1952.

The vines sit between roughly 280 and 330 metres altitude on steep slopes of limestone, marl and thin rendzina soils.

This is an extraordinary stretch of vineyard, with Charles Lachaux and Domaine Leroy farming neighbouring vines in the same part of the hill, placing Frey among some exceptional company.

The tiny parcel and old vines mean production is minuscule: just 654 bottles in 2020.

Technical Details

The Chardonnay is harvested by hand in perforated crates before whole-cluster pressing and cold static settling.

Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts over around 20 days, with no malolactic fermentation, preserving the wine’s natural acidity and tension.

The wine is aged on its lees, split between 50% clayver ceramic vessels and 50% new oak, building texture and breadth while keeping the mineral character of Le Corton firmly in focus.

The result is a wine of remarkable depth and energy, with old-vine concentration, fine texture and a finish that seems to keep unfolding.
