About this Wine

Named after the “garden side” of the stage, Côte Jardin has always had a little theatre to it. The 2024 might be its finest performance yet. From barely half an acre of Chardonnay northeast of Fixin, it opens with white blossom, lemon and pear, before gooseberry, peach and a flicker of mint emerge. Flinty reduction and white pepper bring tension and intrigue, while the finish is extraordinarily long. Rare, precise and beautifully complete. Just 1,572 bottles made.

Tasting Notes

One of 2024’s great little secrets: rare white Fixin with perfume, flint and electric energy.

Fixin ‘Côté Jardin’

The nose is gorgeous: white blossom, fresh lemon and pear, then gooseberry and a little peach, with an almost cooling hint of mint appearing behind the fruit. There’s a fine thread of flinty reduction too, giving the wine that struck-match intrigue we love without ever dominating it.

On the palate, everything clicks. The fruit has generosity, but it’s pulled tight by citrus, minerality and a subtle twist of white pepper. There’s real tension here, yet nothing feels severe. It’s poised, harmonious and incredibly precise.

And then there’s the finish. Long, mineral and lemony, it just keeps going. A seriously beautiful bottle.

The Name

‘Côté Jardin’ is stage direction in French—the “garden side” of the theatre. (Much more elegant than our British “stage right”!) Paired with Côté Cour—its red sibling from the same plot—this wine is part of a duo that brings a touch of theatre to the vineyard. But Côté Jardin doesn’t play second fiddle. It takes centre stage with clarity and grace, showing the quiet power of a site that deserves the spotlight.

The Plot

Côte Jardin comes from Les Treuilles and Les Ravery, family vineyards northeast of Fixin planted to Chardonnay in 2008.

The scale is wonderfully Burgundian: just 0.2061 hectares, barely more than half an acre.

Within that tiny area are two contrasting soils. One part is deeper and richer in clay, producing more generous fruit. The other is poorer and far stonier, scattered with rounded “tête de chat” limestone, where the vines produce smaller, more concentrated grapes.

That contrast is written all over the wine: generosity and perfume on one side, tension, precision and mineral bite on the other.

Technical Details

The Chardonnay was harvested by hand on 20 September 2024.

Whole bunches were given a long, gentle pneumatic pressing of around 2 hours 30 minutes, followed by 86 hours of cold settling at 8°C. Fermentation took place in stainless steel before the wine spent 12 months on its fine lees in 600-litre demi-muids.

It was then filtered before bottling.

From those 0.2061 hectares, the entire 2024 production amounted to just 1,572 bottles and 10 magnums.

Our Take

It’s easy to think all the best white Burgundy comes from the Côte de Beaune, but ignore the whites of Fixin at your peril. In the 1800s, Dr Lavalle classified Fixin Blanc just behind Montrachet and Meursault.

This micro-cuvée from Adèle and Simon shows you exactly why. An absolutely joyous rendition of unbridled, pure electric energy. Citrus, minerality and tension fly through the wine, but there’s still real beauty and balance underneath it all.
