This very youthful and tightly wound Corton is refined, but also has a fascinating dark side. I love the candied orange, dried flower and hot dry earth character that is woven into the deep, beautifully ripe red fruit aromas. Great concentration and a stack of fine tannins on the compact, medium- to full-bodied palate. Very long, powerful licorice and spice finish.

Tasting Notes

Deep, powerful Corton Grand Cru from a tiny monopole within the château grounds, layered with black fruit, spice and earth.

Le Clos du Château is not simply close to the domaine. The vines are planted within the actual grounds of the Château, making this tiny Grand Cru monopole feel almost like the estate’s private garden.

The wine has the depth and presence you hope for from Corton. Blackberry and blackcurrant arrive with enormous concentration, joined by rose, liquorice and dark spice. As it opens, more savoury notes begin to emerge: forest floor, mushroom and warm earth, adding another layer beneath the fruit.

There is serious power here, but also tremendous refinement. The tannins are abundant yet remarkably fine, creating a compact, structured palate without losing the wine’s elegance. The finish is long, spicy and deeply mineral, with the fruit continuing to build long after each sip.

A profound, beautifully composed Corton with the intensity to impress now and the structure to develop for many years.

The Plot

Le Clos du Château is a tiny 0.33-hectare monopole situated entirely within the grounds of their Château, come winery in Aloxe-Corton.

The vineyard has a south-east exposure, with stony ochre soils over a substratum of marl and clay. The vines average around 47 years old.

Few vineyards could feel more closely connected to an estate. This is Corton quite literally growing outside Domaine Frey’s front door, at the heart of the château and the domaine itself.

Technical Details

The Pinot Noir is harvested by hand and sorted parcel by parcel in small crates before vinification in temperature-controlled concrete tanks.

Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts before the wine is matured in oak barrels for 18 to 20 months.

The extended élevage suits the scale of the wine, allowing its powerful fruit, fine tannins and savoury complexity to knit together while retaining the depth and structure expected of Corton Grand Cru.

Domaine Frey

Discover Their Story

Domaine Frey

There’s a new generation behind Domaine Frey. Now led by Caroline Frey's sister, Delphine Frey alongside young cellar master Axelle Piska, formerly of Domaine Étienne Sauzet, the seven-hectare estate is entering an exciting new chapter.

From Pommard, Volnay and Meursault to the slopes of Aloxe-Corton, its tiny range culminates in three Grands Crus, including their own Monopole, Corton Grand Cru ‘Le Clos du Château’. Organic farming, biodynamic principles and a new precision in the cellar are putting this historic domaine firmly back on the map.
