One of the wines that defines Messager-Germain for us. Intense yet almost weightless, with extraordinary length and a gliding elegance that disguises just how much is going on beneath. Cherry, raspberry and strawberry dominate, with a little blueberry adding depth. Violet leaps from the glass, followed by rose, while an incredibly fine mineral thread runs through the wine from its exceptionally shallow, stony soils.
Production is minuscule: just 593 bottles and 10 magnums.
Bright and perfumed, with cherry, raspberry, violet, rose, and a cool mineral line.

Tasting Notes
Just 593 bottles. Violet, rose and red berries from Morey’s extraordinary cliff-top parcel.

This is beautiful Pinot Noir. There is real intensity of fruit, but absolutely no sense of heaviness. Cherry, raspberry and strawberry glide across the palate, with a touch of blueberry underneath and exceptional length.
Then comes the perfume. The trademark violet aroma jumps from the glass, with a more complex rose character sitting just beneath it. Through everything runs this cool, persistent mineral line, giving the wine precision and energy from beginning to end. Powerful in flavour, incredibly elegant in feel.
The Zébra Barrel
Created just for the domaine by Tonnellerie Rousseau, the “Zébra” blends alternating oak staves—one lightly toasted, one barely touched. The result is a whisper of oak, not a shout. Just enough to add texture, not mask terroir. It’s a masterstroke.

The Plot
Pierre Virant occupies a remarkable position high above Morey-Saint-Denis, directly above the Grand Cru Clos Saint-Denis.
The vines sit at around 270 metres, right at the top of the slope beside a cliff, creating their own little microclimate. Beneath them is brown clay and Jurassic limestone, with in places only around 30cm of topsoil before the vines reach bedrock.
That lack of soil is fundamental to the character of the wine. There is very little for the vines to work with, and the result is concentrated fruit allied to a striking mineral quality that seems to run through every part of the wine.
The vines are around 45 years old, and Messager-Germain farms just 0.5397 hectares here.
Technical Details
100% Pinot Noir, harvested by hand on 20 September 2024.
The fruit was completely destemmed before a three-day pre-fermentation at 8°C. Extraction was moderate, with four punch-downs and predominantly gentle pumping over with low oxygen exposure.
The wine was aged for 12 months in oak barrels, 30% new, before being racked from the bottom of the barrel and bottled without filtration.
Production is minuscule: just 593 bottles and 10 magnums.
