About this Wine

This has been one of our favourites since Messager-Germain’s very first vintage, and the 2024 might be the most convincing yet. This is not your average Bourgogne Pinot Noir. From a single 0.38-hectare parcel in Fixin, its deep clay soils give the wine real substance and presence. Cherry, cranberry and raspberry lead into darker blackberry and blackcurrant, with black pepper and liquorice adding spice and depth. Generous, beautifully perfumed and seriously satisfying, this is Bourgogne that packs a punch.

Tasting Notes

From deep Fixin clay: a dark, perfumed Bourgogne with spice, swagger and serious substance.

Bourgogne Pinot Noir

There’s a reason this disappears every year... The 2024 opens with a gorgeous rush of cherry, cranberry and raspberry, but it doesn’t stay simply pretty for long. Blackberry and blackcurrant begin to emerge underneath, giving the fruit a darker, more serious dimension.

Then comes the spice: freshly cracked black pepper and a twist of liquorice, bringing just enough savoury complexity to pull everything together.

What we love about this wine is its generosity. It still has the perfume and freshness you want from Pinot Noir, but there’s considerably more weight and presence than you expect from Bourgogne. Supple, energetic and immensely drinkable, but with enough depth to make you stop and take notice.

One of those bottles that feels equally at home being properly contemplated or disappearing alongside a Sunday roast.

📍 The Plots

This comes entirely from Potey, a single vineyard in Fixin planted to Pinot Noir in 2015 and 2017.

The parcel covers 0.38 hectares and runs north to south. The soil here is unusually deep, with around 80cm of rich clay before reaching a layer of rounded limestone pebbles beneath.

That combination is important. The clay retains water well and gives the wine its generosity, weight and darker fruit character, while the limestone underneath provides natural drainage.

Simon and Adèle train the vines using Cordon de Royat, helping to control vigour and concentrate the fruit. The result is a Bourgogne with considerably more stature than the appellation on the label might suggest.

Technical Details

The Pinot Noir was harvested by hand on 22 September 2024 and completely destemmed.

The fruit spent eight days at 8°C before fermentation, followed by deliberately gentle extraction. There were just three light punch-downs, with Simon and Adèle relying predominantly on gentle pump-overs with very little oxygen.

The wine was then aged for 12 months in oak barrels from 2020, before being racked from the bottom of the barrel and bottled without filtration.

Production in 2024 was just 1,842 bottles.
