About this Wine

A seriously impressive Chardonnay from just north of Fixin, made in tiny quantities from the En Malpertuis vineyard. The 2024 is intensely aromatic, packed with pear, green apple, lemon and lime, with a flinty mineral edge and loads of tension through the palate. Precise, energetic and far more serious than the Coteaux Bourguignons name suggests. Just 1,217 bottles were made.

Tasting Notes

A tiny-production Chardonnay from a single parcel in Couchey, just north of Fixin. Aromatic and precise.

Coteaux Bourguignons Chardonnay

Very aromatic from the off, with fresh pear, green apple, lemon and lime running through the nose. The palate is all about tension: bright citrus, a strong mineral line and a distinctly flinty edge, finishing precise, energetic and seriously refreshing. There’s plenty of fruit here, but it’s the tension and clarity that make it stand out.

The Plot

The Chardonnay comes from “En Malpertuis” in Couchey, immediately north of Fixin. The 0.1787-hectare parcel was planted in 1991 on clay-limestone and silty soils.

Interestingly, both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are planted within the same vineyard. The reds occupy the stonier upper section, while the Chardonnay sits lower down on the richer part of the slope.

Technical Details

The Chardonnay was hand harvested on 21 September 2024 and pressed as whole bunches in a long, gentle pneumatic press lasting around 2½ hours. After 36 hours of cold settling at 8°C, fermentation took place in stainless steel.

The wine then spent 12 months on its fine lees, with 70% aged in 600-litre demi-muids and 30% in stainless steel, before filtration and bottling. Production was limited to 1,217 bottles.

Is this wine ready to drink now?

Yes. This is ready to drink now and should give plenty of pleasure straight away. Open it for its perfume, texture and charm rather than waiting for the perfect distant moment.

Should I buy one bottle or a few?

One to try, three if you want to follow it over time, six if you already know the producer or style. Burgundy moves quickly, and small parcels rarely hang around for long.

Each bottle is wrapped in tissue before being carefully placed into our specially imported Italian boxes, tested to rigorous standards. We have literally dropped them from the first storey of our house. All our packaging is paper-based and recyclable.

Can I send it as a gift?

Absolutely. As standard, our wines arrive wrapped in bespoke tissue paper. At checkout, you can also add gift bags, gift boxes and notes.
