NO-NONSENSE NOTES.

This Aligoté doesn’t whisper—it zings. Grown from 70-year-old vines at the foot of Volnay, it’s all green apple, lemon zest, and a flick of sea spray. Pierrick Bouley lets it sing with no sulfur at the start, and the result is electric: bright, salty, and just a little wild. One sip and you’ll understand why we jumped to bring it to the UK.

Callum Callum
Aligoté rarely gets a leading role in Burgundy, but under Pierrick’s direction it positively shines. Crisp and clean, with citrus, stone and a flirt with the tropics, it is charming in all the right ways. Vineyard care, style, soul; you can taste it! This is Burgundy with a twist, and one you can't help but love.

Volnay Roots. 70-Year-Old Vines. UK Exclusive. Only 1,200 Bottles.

Planted in En Coulézin, a tiny plot at the foot of Volnay, this Aligoté is something special. The vines are 70 years old, the soils a classic mix of marl and clay. Pierrick Bouley handles it with a gentle touch—no sulfur during fermentation, a soft press, and ageing in used barrels to preserve energy and detail.

The result? A vibrant white wine with green apple, lemon, grapefruit, white pepper and zippy freshness. There’s also a subtle creaminess and roundness from lees ageing that balances the zip, along with a slightly nutty, coconut edge from the old wood. It’s a wine that tastes like it knows exactly what it’s doing.

📍 The Plot

En Coulézin is a prized spot just below the village of Volnay. With North–South exposure and 70-year-old vines rooted deep in marl and clay, the balance between freshness and texture is dialled in.

🍇 Technical

Manual harvest, whole-bunch press, no sulfur at the start of vinification. Cold settling, natural fermentation in vat, then ageing in barrel for 12 months. Light SO₂ added before bottling if needed. 1,200 bottles produced.

Bourgogne, the broadest appellation in Burgundy, offers a diverse introduction to the region’s rich winemaking heritage. Spanning a wide range of terroirs, from the rolling hills of the Côte d'Or to the cooler northern vineyards, Bourgogne produces both red and white wines, with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay at the forefront. The reds are characterised by fresh red fruit flavours, smooth tannins, and earthy undertones, while the whites are marked by bright acidity, crisp minerality, and notes of citrus and green apple.

The wines from Bourgogne come from vineyards with varying soil types, including limestone, clay, and marl, which help to express a true sense of place. Burgundy’s temperate climate, with a balance of sun and rain, allows the grapes to ripen slowly, resulting in wines with both freshness and complexity. The region’s varied terroirs and microclimates contribute to a fascinating range of wine styles, making Bourgogne an ideal starting point for exploring the diversity of Burgundy’s wines.

With a long history at the heart of Burgundy’s winemaking tradition, Bourgogne wines are often the first step on a Burgundy journey. These wines offer approachable yet authentic expressions of the region’s key varietals, providing excellent value while showcasing Burgundy’s terroir. Whether for newcomers or seasoned wine enthusiasts, Bourgogne wines are a perfect introduction to the complexity and charm of the region.

The Bourgogne appellation embodies the essence of Burgundy, where passion, tradition, and craftsmanship come together to create wines that are both accessible and full of character. Whether enjoyed young or with some bottle age, Bourgogne wines offer a true taste of the region’s celebrated winemaking culture.

Bourgogne Aligoté is a distinctive white wine from Burgundy, crafted from the lesser-known Aligoté grape, which offers a contrast to the region’s more famous Chardonnay. Grown in Burgundy for centuries, Aligoté produces wines that are lively, fresh, and vibrant, typically lighter and crisper than the fuller-bodied, oak-aged Chardonnays of the region. These wines are marked by refreshing acidity and lively notes of green apple, citrus, and occasionally a subtle honeyed richness, making them a delightful option for those seeking a more approachable white Burgundy.

The Aligoté grape thrives across Burgundy’s diverse terroirs, from the cooler, higher-altitude sites of the Côte Chalonnaise to the fertile soils of the Côte d'Or. Its ability to ripen earlier than Chardonnay makes it well-suited to the region’s varied climate, particularly in areas with slightly shorter growing seasons. Bourgogne Aligoté is often enjoyed young, offering a bright, zesty profile that pairs wonderfully with fresh seafood, salads, and traditional Burgundy dishes such as escargot.

While it may not carry the same widespread recognition as Burgundy’s more famous varietals, Bourgogne Aligoté is a unique expression of the region’s winemaking diversity. It provides an affordable entry point into Burgundy wines, all while reflecting the quality, craftsmanship, and terroir that define the region. Whether enjoyed as an aperitif or paired with food, Bourgogne Aligoté remains an enduring favourite among those who appreciate its fresh and approachable character.

BORING WINE? BURGUNDY WINE!

Where legends are bottled A legacy in every glass Because 'Burgundy' sounds better than 'Boring-undy'! Where monks mastered the vine

Ah, Burgundy! The land where wine isn’t just fermented grape juice—it’s a full-blown personality in a bottle. Every sip of Burgundy feels like a direct line to the rolling hills, ancient cellars, and ridiculously proud winemakers who’ve spent centuries perfecting their craft. It’s not about flashy labels or trendy blends. Oh no, Burgundy is pure terroir—each bottle a postcard from its vineyard, whispering tales of limestone soils and meticulous care.

And individuality? Burgundy’s got it in spades. No two bottles are the same, thanks to its absurdly detailed patchwork of vineyards. One minute, you’re savouring a voluptuous, velvety Pinot Noir, the next, a steely, complex Chardonnay.

It’s not just wine; it’s a sense of place in a glass, a celebration of imperfection and authenticity. Burgundy wines don’t try to please everyone—they just quietly blow your mind. Welcome to the club.
