Pedigree Without the Price Tag
Philippe describes this cuvée as “having the style but not the power of a Grand Cru”, and when you see where it sits, it’s easy to understand why. Rue Rousseau touches the boundary of Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru and rests just beside Les Pucelles Premier Cru. The 2021 is finely perfumed, showing lemon and verbena notes, with underlying minerality and excellent balance. There’s real substance here, carried with elegance rather than force – a Puligny that punches well above its weight.
📍 The Plot
At just 0.23 ha, Chavy’s holding is tiny, planted in 1955 and 1980. Clay-rich soils at the lower end give fruit generosity, while limestone at the top edge adds drive and definition. Production rarely exceeds 1,600 bottles – scarcity that adds to the allure.
🍇 Technical
Hand-harvested Chardonnay, whole-bunch pressed, fermented in tank before finishing in barrel. Aged 11 months in 228L oak barrels (10–20% new), 16 months’ élevage in total.
